Sample Letter to your Legislators
We are mostly interested in your legislator’s LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR.
DUTIES: Develops and oversees the Member’s legislative package, in conjunction with the Member, Chief of Staff, and legislative staff. … The Legislative Director may serve as the principal substitute for the Member at legislative meetings and provides legislative updates at staff meetings in conjunction with staff.
I use Govbuddy.com to look up each member’s Legislative Director. If there is no Legislative Director, I use the Chief of Staff.
In sending an email to your legislator it is better to use their staff as the legislator would probably never see your message. So here is a sample letter:
Dear (Legislative Director or Chief of Staff),
This is a request for your help in legalizing ferrets in California. Domestic ferrets are misclassified as wild animals by the state of California. I hope you can understand the absurdity of that situation.
Domestic ferrets are domestic. They are legal in 48 states without any detrimental effects and it is past time to legalize them in California.
Extremists in the Sierra Club and the HSUS have prevented discussion of ferret legalization for over 15 years based on the concern of “one more pet in California.” Ferrets, as meat-eaters do contribute to global warming. HSUS and PETA have members who are opposed to pet ownership in general.
I would like the issue discussed by my legislators. Domestic animals are allowed by the California Constitution CIV DIVISION 2. PROPERTY [654 – 1422]
The last time ferret legalization was in front of the California legislature it passed 13-0 in the Senate Appropriations Committee on 08/15/05 and then landed in the suspense file to die.
I think it is time to bring the issue of ferret legalization back for discussion!
Please use your name and address – showing that you live in the right district. I encourage you to make your email personalized. Perhaps attach a photo of yourself with a ferret and a note “we hope you will help us.”
