Legalize
Ferrets

After all, they’re called Domestic Ferrets!

Yes, I'll Contact My Assemblymember and State Senator!

If you are a California resident and are willing to commit to contact your state assemblyman and state senator asking that they consider a ferret legalization bill, please use this form.

It is so much better if one of their actual constituents; people from inside the district make the request.

After I get this form I’ll add you to a database of people who said they are willing to do this under each legislator’s name. I encourage people to get to know each other and work as a team. I’ll create a closed Facebook Group of sign ups. I’ll have very specific material and suggestions how to proceed.

Thank you!

After you “find your legislators” please use the form below to share with the organizers.

SAMPLE LETTER TO LEGISLATORS

Please use any or all of this when contacting your California state representative.

Dear Legislator –

This is a request for you to consider supporting our efforts to legalize ferrets in California. Can we at least talk about it?

Please consider:

When we brought this subject up in the past, we get the same response. Eyes roll over and we hear “ferrets could have a negative impact on the environment.” And we must hear about invasive rabbits in Australia or whatever our opponents dream up. Really, it is comical.

There is no record of invasive ferrets in the USA. No damage to anything has ever been documented as being caused by ferrets. Until our opponents bring some documentation or science to the discussion – we’re not buying it.

The real reason the ferret issue has not even discussed and that is opposition from the Sierra Club and HSUS. Those are two organizations no elected official wants to go against. Their reasons for opposing us are simple:

“We don’t want another pet in California.” But they are not honest as to the why they believe that.

Politically active members of the Sierra Club are concerned about global warming. The pet industry does consume a lot of meat products. Meat production is cited as a major cause of global warming.  But come ‘on ferrets are small, they don’t eat that much!

The PETA infiltrated HSUS has many members who are opposed to pet ownership in general. They view pets as “animal slavery.” Thus, they don’t want ferrets added to the prison population.

Oct 28, 2020 — We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals’ best interests if the institution of “pet keeping”—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as “pets”—never existed.

The above-mentioned positions would not be popular with the public. Therefore, they misclassify domestic ferrets as wild animals, keeping them in their illegal status.

People of California want the freedom to own domestic pets. We, as your constituents deserve to have the issue debated honestly in the open. In fact, our state constitution recognizes our right to own domestic pets:

CIV DIVISION 2. PROPERTY [654 – 1422]
There may be ownership of all inanimate things which are capable of appropriation or of manual delivery; of all domestic animals; of all obligations; of such products of labor or skill as the composition of an author, the good will of a business, trade marks and signs, and of rights created or granted by statute.

Consider the last time it was in the legislature was AB 50 in 2004 which passed the Senate by 26-2 and the Assembly by 64-4 and died on file. No bill has been debated since and we credit the Sierra Club and HSUS for that.

It isn’t fair and we are requesting that you consider bringing the issue up for a fair and honest suggestion.
